Located outside of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, Fort Lovrijenac is hard to miss from the Walls of the City of Dubrovnik. This stunning fortress was once supposed to have been built by the Venetians, but Dubrovnik was faster and when the Venetians arrived, they were confronted with this amazing structure that “hides” an interesting secret – its walls are actually thinner than the walls surrounding the city. In the event of Lovrijenac being taken by enemy hands, it would be easier for Dubrovnik to bombard it and destroy it, due to its fragile structure (even though it doesn’t look fragile at all!).
As you can probably see from the picture, it is a steep walk to the entrance of the fortress. The walk there isn’t difficult though. You have incredible views of the cliffs, the sea and the Old Town all the way up there, including multiple filming locations in Game of Thrones (with Lovrijenac itself serving as the place where King Joffrey celebrated its name day and bad things happened).
I did not realise that the ticket to visit the City Walls actually includes the entrance to Lovrijenac Fortress. So, after climbing all the way to the top and reached the ticket office, the lovely man asked me if I had bought a ticket to the Walls. I said yes, and he asked me if I had it with me… and well, I didn’t. I had gone to the Walls the previous day and had left the ticket back in my room. So… Nic walks down the hill, goes back to her room inside the Old Town, picks up her ticket and goes back up again. One thing I can say is that Croatia made me physically fit again 😅
But you know what. It was all worth it. Just look at the views.
The weather in Dubrovnik changes fast. When I finally got inside the fortress, thick dark clouds had taken over the skies and I had a very dramatic scene upon me. Just perfect.
Inside the fort all you can see are cannons and beautiful stoned arches.
If you’re a fan of the Game of Thrones series, you’ll probably recognise a lot of these places. If not, hope you still enjoyed the beautiful views from Lovrijenac 🙂
