Food appreciation post – Zagreb, Croatia

So let’s go back to Zagreb for a little while 🙂 I don’t consider myself a foodie by nature, but I do enjoy trying out the local delicacies and make that a part of my trip.

In Zagreb, I stayed in a studio apartment so most times I would buy something light to have for dinner when I was back and tired from walking all day long. I’m also the kind of person who tends to lose appetite when it’s really hot – and it was hot. To be quite frank, most times I just wanted a salad. In Zagreb, you will find lots of pizzerias, hamburger places, pasta places and then the traditional Croatian cuisine. For someone who does not eat red meat and was suffering from the heat, most options were not really an option. But I did try my best to eat some good and proper food and here am I documenting it 🙂

  1. My first meal in Zagreb – a salty tuna crepe with beautiful green olives – Nutelino

2. A cheesy typical Croatian place and… on budget! – La Štruk

This dish is called Strukli and it is very similar to lasagna. It does not have any meat, and it’s mostly based on cottage cheese and pasta. It is indeed delicious and it came boiling to the table. So I know I just mentioned how hot it was… but I couldn’t miss the chance of trying this Zagreb typical dish. Also, this place as a hidden backyard, where it was so nice and fresh. Look at the setting in the photos below!

4. Dinner at another Croatian restaurant – the best Octopus Salad I ever had! – Konoba Didovsan

This place was just 1 minute from where I was staying. The esplanade was always full of people, but I was happy to sit alone inside. The tablecloth were all made of traditional Croatian heart patterns (which I dinf lovely) and the food was just so delicious. I love Octopus salad and this was the best one I ever had.

I treated myself to dessert as well – a typical Croatian Rožata, with coffee.

4. The dreamy place for breakfast – Velvet Cafe

One day I decided to go and have breakfast outside. I found this cafe named Velvet with great reviews – I was mostly attracted by its indoor decor, but the coffee and the Bučnica were also delicious.

What is Bučnica you may ask? It’s a typical strudel made with summer squash, fresh cheese, cream and eggs wrapped in a thin dough. One thing I learned is that in Croatia they love to have cheese on everything. And, well, I’m not against that type of life!

Each table had a book. I could see this was Shakespeare but, everything was written in Croatian, so couldn’t understand which play.

Finally, my last dessert in Zagreb was in the famous bakery Vincek. The group was founded in 1977, family owned, and it’s renowned for changing the bakery scene in Zagreb. This slice of peach pie was simply to die for, so if you’re ever around Zagreb, don’t forget to get some goodies here.

And that is all for today – I’ve been on a roll! This post was different from what I usually do (not the best food photographer) but wanted to share a bit of my “foodie wannabe” experience in Zagreb! Vincek was a personal recommendation, Velvet and La Struck I found through TripAdvisor and the other two were by chance!

One thing I can say is that I doubt you’ll ever go wrong with food in the entire country. I did not have a single bad experience. The food was genuinely fresh and delicious everywhere I went. Plus, the coffee is simply AMAZING everywhere – as well as the wine!

Hard not to fall in love with a country like this, don’t you think? 😉

Love, Nic
